ELI 2008 Online Focus Session Discussion Wiki

ELI Focus Sessions provide opportunities to learn from campus innovators and each other. At the close of each presentation, participants in the 2008 ELI Online Spring Focus Session were invited to share responses to discussion questions posted in the Adobe Connect learning space. These responses were cleared from the meeting space and added to this discussion wiki, developing a community list of emerging themes and “take home” lessons. As you journey back to your own campus, consider adding to the wiki to enrich the resources available to the EDUCAUSE community.

CAWiessner: We can improve students' critical thinking skills and there are more ways to do that than we may have thought of.Andrew Middleton: Finding a mix around Relevant, Realism, Engagement, Challenge - orchestrating these attributesChristie Liu: a combintation of content expertise and technological fluencyJill D. Mullaney: Yes, not every tool will work in every case.Jill D. Mullaney: And educators and learners are so different, that a variety of tools and methods is really a requirement these days.UW-Madison academic tec: We are finding interesting answers to questions of complexity, beginner/advanced learner, realism/cartoons in ed psych lit to help us in building ed games & sims

Diane: Some of the ideas presented in these sessions I would like to incorporate into my online information literacy course.Salve_Regina: I am starting a game-based project with a faculty member in the education department. Neither one of us has a lot of programming experience. Active Worlds may be a viable option for our development and testing of the idea.

Maha Bali: Giving students the option to both do a traditional paper, and some sort of visual output

Andrew Bonamici: having students work directly with curators, librarians, technologists in addition to the professor

Louise Thorpe: "thinking like a...." -great way to capture authenticity and core critical thinking

CAWiessner: There is even more that I can do with these projects than I had previously been imagining. And I have a pretty good imagination.Louise Thorpe: Sad that partners still reluctant to put on official sites - that would add so much more to it

Robin Ashford: When universities engage with the community the benefits are great including many that are unanticipated.

Christie Liu: Effective collaborative learning comes with joined approaches: classroom, paper-based, computer-based, but needs to be well designed and implemented.Christie Liu: When David discussed his cases, he used video conferencing, as an example. Jill D. Mullaney: And I think we need to remember not to place form before function. We should use these tools as a way of furthering our educational goals.

Salve_Regina: We are in the midst of a laptop initiative. Our faculty don't really know how to use the laptops effectively for teaching. The short lecture--mini mission--debriefing idea is very applicable.Robin : We are looking at virtual worlds for distance learning classes.Robin : So far mainly SL, but also following Croquet very closely.

Andrew Bonamici: I'm sharing Scot's examples with interactive media developers, archivists/curators, librarians, & history faculty. Really outstanding.CAWiessner: I have a project in progress and got some ideas for doing it in a more effective ways, as well as great resources to share with students.
