Abstract:The Justice Department's mounting effort to persuade or compel ISPs and other communications companies to keep detailed information on their customers' habits has triggered concerns throughout the privacy community. In a detailed memo, CDT highlights questions about the cost, impact on privacy and effectiveness of such mandates. The plan proposed by the DOJ is particularly troubling given the weak privacy standards that apply to personal information stored by ISPs and other companies.
