James D. Bruce

Professor James D. Bruce is Vice President for Information Systems, Chief Information Officer, and Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

As Vice President for Information Systems and CIO, he is responsible for directing the evolution, integration, provision, and effective use of computing and communications resources throughout MIT in support of teaching, research, and learning along with day-to-day operations.

Prior to becoming Vice President for Information Systems in July 1986, he was Director of Information Systems. Professor Bruce was also Program manager for Reengineering at MIT from 1994 to 1998. From January 1979 to June 1983, Professor Bruce was Director of MIT's Industrial Liaison Program. There he managed MIT's program to provide industry with efficient, timely access to its research and staff resources. At the end of his tenure as Director, the Industrial Liaison Program provided services to some three hundred companies in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Japan, and Latin America. Professor Bruce was Associate Dean of MIT's School of Engineering from July 1971 to December 1978; he served as its Dean from September 1977 to July 1978.

Professor Bruce received the SM and ScD degrees in Electrical Engineering from MIT. BS degrees were received in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from the Lamar State College of Technology in Beaumont, Texas.

A decade ago, Professor Bruce was instrumental in the formation of NEARnet, the initial academic and research network for the New England states. He was a founding member of the Board of Trustees of the Consortium for Scientific Computing which operated the John von Neumann Center, one of the original National Science Foundation supercomputer facilities. From 1999 to April 2002, he chaired the Network Planning and Policy Advisory Committee for Internet2, and was a member of the Board of Trustees for the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development.

Among his current professional interests are leadership and management of enterprise-wide information technology organizations.

Professor Bruce and his wife, Eleanor MacLaren Bruce, have three adult children. They live in Lexington, Massachusetts.
