Mark S. Walbert, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Economics
Dr. Walbert received his Ph.D. in natural resource and environmental Economics from the University of New Mexico in 1984, when he joined the faculty at Illinois State. He has taught a variety of courses in economics in a variety of settings, from lecture hall to internet only. He has published several refereed journal articles on the subject of economics education, with an emphasis on the use of instructional technology to enhance teaching and learning in undergraduate economics courses. He has coauthored two software packages that have been used to teach both high school and college economics. Dr. Walbert received several teaching awards at Illinois State, including the Outstanding University Teacher Award in 1998. He received a grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a computer classroom in which a broader number of economics courses could be taught that utilize instructional technology on a daily basis. Dr. Walbert also served as the director of the Center for Economics Education at Illinois State from 1998 to 2000. Dr. Walbert served as the director of Faculty Technology Support from January 2000 to August 2003. He joined the Provost’s staff as AVP for Academic Information Technology in August 2003.
The Associate Vice President for Academic Information Technology has oversight responsibility for the University’s Campus Technology Support Group (CTSG), which includes Classroom Technology Support, Student Technology Support, Institutional Web Support, Computer Infrastructure Support, and Telecommunication & Networking. CTSG is responsible for “delivering high quality IT services that support distinctiveness and excellence across the University” in support of teaching, research, public service, and outreach activities through the application of state-of-the-art computer and Internet technologies throughout the University and campus residence halls. In 2004, Dr. Walbert worked with the Associate Provost to merge Faculty Technology Support with the Center for the Advancement of Teaching to create the Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology. As chair of the Campus Technology Policy & Planning Council, Dr. Walbert recently completed a campus-wide Information Technology Strategic Plan for 2007 - 2010.
