Title:Show Them the Data: How Publishing Course Usage Stats Can Change Faculty Support (ID: ELI08129)
Author(s):John Fritz (University of Maryland, Baltimore County)
Origin:Presented at ELI Meetings (01/28/2008)

Author(s):Paul A. Helm (Sheffield Hallam University) and Louise Thorpe (Sheffield Hallam University)
Origin:Presented at ELI Meetings (01/30/2006)
Type:Presentations/Speeches
Abstract:Tutors often draw on distance-learning literature to design online communication activities for on-campus students, but is there enough common purpose for the techniques to transfer? This session explores how online communication can be used on campus to create new learning opportunities and empower learners to take control of the experience.

Title:Designing an Interactive Syllabus That Helps Students Uncover the Content (ID: ELI0615)
Author(s):Deborah Everhart (Blackboard, Inc.) and Shirley Waterhouse (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University)
Origin:Presented at ELI Meetings (01/30/2006)
Type:Presentations/Speeches
Abstract:A high percentage of students use online syllabi, but most faculty still use the syllabus as a flat list of required readings. This session provides practical strategies for designing syllabi that encourage students to "uncover" course content and gain a much deeper understanding of course concepts.

Title:An Old Friend in the New World: How to Use the Discussion Board to Build a Learner-Centered Community and Assess Reflective Learning (ID: NLI0523)
Author(s):Christine Weaver (East Carolina University)
Origin:Presented at ELI Meetings (01/25/2005)
Type:Presentations/Speeches
Abstract:While offers to use the latest and greatest technologies to create learning environments cram our Inbox, all we really need to do is to look no further than our course management's Discussion Board. This simple, ubiquitous tool can help us accomplish what matters the most, building a sense of community and creating a learning environment that spans Bloom's entire taxonomy. The intent of this session is to provide the audience with low threshold strategies to yield the greatest learning potential.

Title:Student Use of Classroom IT: Convenience, Communications, and Control (ID: NLI0507)
Author(s):Robert B. Kvavik (University of Minnesota)
Origin:Presented at ELI Meetings (01/24/2005)
Type:Presentations/Speeches
Abstract:What kinds of information technologies do students use? How does this use contribute to their undergraduate experience? An ECAR study involving 4,374 students at13 higher education institutions finds that many of the most IT literate students had mixed feelings about technology in the classroom. Students use classroom IT including course management systems mostly for communication of information and administrative activities and much less in support of learning.

Title:The Authority of Consensus: Next-Generation Course Management Systems (ID: NLI0411)
Author(s):Ronald Bleed (Maricopa Community College District), Malcolm B. Brown (Dartmouth College), and Patricia A. McGee (University of Texas at San Antonio)
Origin:Presented at ELI Meetings (2004)
Type:Presentations/Speeches
Abstract:A diverse set of participants at the NLII 2003 Spring Focus Session on next-generation course management systems (CMSs) agreed to share a common conceptual framework of learner-centered principles, and within that framework, discussed how the use of a course management system can support teaching practices and learning activities that result in deeper learning. The participants identified and prioritized a set of related issues and functional requirements for next-generation CMS. An NLII workgroup was chartered in response to the recommendations of the participants, and four teams emerged and developed the following work products, which will be shared with the NLII Annual Meeting attendees:
- Refined conceptual framework for orienting the use of CMSs around learner-centered principles
- Suite of scenarios for the use of next-generation CMSs
- Intra-institutional issues and recommendations for the use of next-generation CMSs to support deeper learning

Title:Planning for Ecological Diversity in New Learning Environments: Interoperability Between Libraries and Course Management Systems (ID: NLI0415)
Author(s):Louis E. King (University of Michigan-Ann Arbor) and Brian Nielsen (Northwestern University)
Origin:Presented at ELI Meetings (2004)
Type:Presentations/Speeches
Abstract:The wide acceptance of course management systems by our faculties offers technology innovators new opportunities for integrating a variety of information services into the CMS environment. Library services in particular, which complement traditional classroom learning activities, are being recognized as ripe for integration. In an effort to advance such integration opportunities, two working groups within the CIC (the Big Ten universities plus the University of Chicago) have been engaged in dialogue and planning for a regional conference on CMS/library services integration. The Learning Technologies Group (representing CIC IT organizations) and the Digital Library Initiative Overview Committee (representing the CIC libraries) have been working together to plan and execute the conference scheduled for mid-February 2004, with the objective of clarifying working vocabularies and ideas for services among the two communities of practice. This session will present the planning ideas that have informed the upcoming conference, seeking further input from the larger NLII community to further collaboration between library and IT organizations in new designs for library-CMS integration.
