  • Survey on Billing for IT Services May 2nd through May 15th

    Good afternoon all,

We want to bring the following survey to your collective attention. The Communications Infrastructure and Applications (CIA) CG is sponsoring this survey to gather institutional financial approaches to paying for and life cycling key telecom equipment and services. The Network Management (netman) and Wireless Local Area Networking (wireless) CGs may also benefit from this data. The CIA CG steering committee and the financial working group will have full access to the data. The aggregate data will be publicly shared with the CIA CG and available for anyone to view.

These questions assume you are knowledgeable or have access to obtain answers around the following areas below. Thus you may need to gather information from other areas of your institution for these question topics:

Understanding of established annual budgets, and main source of funding; which services you have a charge back model or cost recovery funding model; equipment life cycle information, and any feedback (pro or con) for these models.

The survey is now available now until end of day Monday May 15, 2023 -  CIA - Unified Communications, Networking, and Telecom Billing Practices Survey - May 2023 and should take approximately 8 minutes to complete.

We will review all results at a future monthly virtual meetup.

    Thank you.

    --Mark Wehrle, CIA CG Team

    Agenda
Michael B. Klein Northwestern University Library
Northwestern University Library’s Repository & Digital Curation workgroup has been developing and running cloud-hosted applications since 2016. Our initial approach was a simple “lift-and-shift” operation, moving our premises-hosted services to virtual machines hosted in Amazon EC2. We quickly migrated to some cloud-native utility services like our relational database and search index. More recently, we have started to take advantage of the scalability offered by cloud-native services such as serverless functions (AWS Lambda), serverless container infrastructure (AWS Fargate), and short-lived, large-scale batch operations.

Now we are taking the next step, translating our bespoke data processing pipeline into a series of state machines using AWS Step Functions and other cloud technologies. At each step, we have had to reevaluate our local development environment, either emulating or mocking the AWS services our applications depend on. To overcome the limitations of this approach, we have created a cloud-based development environment based on a heavily customized AWS Cloud9 environment. This has allowed each developer on our team to access the full range of AWS offerings, generating quick prototypes and iterating quickly on solutions, without the overhead or uncertainty of trying to emulate the entire stack on a laptop or local workstation, but without sacrificing the development tools we’re accustomed to. It has also led to a development platform that can be stood up and torn down quickly for easy onboarding as well as a quick “reset” of one or many existing setups. This presentation will explain our approach, how we got here, and how it’s going, as well as the surprises and challenges we have encountered along the way.

It is that time of year again!  We are soliciting INTEREST and BOOK IDEAS for the upcoming Itana Book Club.

For those unfamiliar with the Itana Book Club, we select a book and have 2 or 3 calls over a period of a few months to discuss as we read it.  We then report what we learned during a Friday Itana call session.  It is open to anyone interested in Itana and is an easy, low commitment, fun way to interact with your Itana colleagues.  You are welcome and encouraged to join even if you can’t commit to fully reading the selected book or join the discussions.

This will be our 8th book and we need your assistance to pick one for this session.  Visit the Book Club Itana Page to see what we’ve read to date.

Please sign up using this Google doc or contact me directly at Jonathan.DuChateau@wisc.edu if you are interested in joining the book club, have a book to suggest, or if you are interested in helping to facilitate this year’s Itana Book Club.
