Came across this quite interesting revisiting of Bloom's taxonomy that gives examples of activities at the 6 levels that AI can do, and also examples of distinctively (at least for now!) human capabilities. Check it out: https://ecampus.oregonstate.edu/faculty/artificial-intelligence-tools/meaningful-learning/ ...

Thanks @Jason Bock! I saw the Tiffin resource and thought it was a great practical guide to generative AI. It's great to hear that the Sydney resources were of some assistance. I'd be quite interested to find out more about the bandages and longer-term solutions around asynchronous learning/assessment. ...

Very much looking forward to this one as async is a bit unsolved challenge in my mind! ------------------------------ Danny Liu Associate Professor The University of Sydney ------------------------------

Those are great points @Jason Bock. At the University of Sydney, we have the TII AI detector enabled only for our central academic integrity team; faculty and other instructors don't have access to it. The central integrity team may choose to use it as part of their investigations but it is only one ...

I just came across this article on The Chronicle (https://www.chronicle.com/article/instead-of-policing-students-we-need-to-abolish-cheating) and was really warmed and encouraged by it. In it, the author challenges the standard discourse that blames students for cheating, and instead zooms out to examine ...

Interesting question - I'm curious what AWS' take is on this @Louis Brooks if you're able to share? At Uni of Sydney we're developing user-facing LLM applications for education/teaching but not for research as much. For research, we generally show things like https://scite.ai/assistant and https://elicit.org/ ...

At the University of Sydney, which is a different context to yours, we don't yet have institutional licences for generative AI apart from Adobe Firefly (for image generation) which comes as part of our Adobe Creative Suite licencing. For the LLMs, we're either recommending people use Bing Chat in creative ...

This working paper is a really interesting (albeit long) read: The Future of AI in Education: 13 Things We Can Do to Minimize the Damage I'm only halfway through but this is thoughtful and bravely looks beyond the near-term future to bigger pictures of the impact of AI on education, human skills, and ...

Interestingly, a few days ago Microsoft released 'Azure ChatGPT', which was open source code that allowed anyone to run a private instance of a ChatGPT-like app on their own server, and connect it to Microsoft Azure's OpenAI API endpoints, essentially decoupling both the ChatGPT experience and the LLM ...

Thanks @Amy Vecchione for that note about Perplexity's ToS and privacy policy. Quite a vendor-favourable one indeed! I just looked up the ToS of scite.ai, another AI tool that I show faculty because of its ability to combine real scientific papers with GPT's language abilities, and it has a similarly ...

Great points and insights all around. I feel @Szymon Machajewski's prediction is a highly probable outcome for these generative AIs - helpfully embedded in our day-to-day work but with the human in the loop. As @Ondrea Quiros said, even though these AIs are not super accurate or trustworthy, they can ...

Thanks all for your insights. @Ondrea Quiros your additional steps are really important; we've found that demystifying AI is an important part of faculty development. The three steps also seem to be missing a basic provocation - we show our faculty some examples of what AI can do (and not just about ...

Thanks for sharing this Heather! I found this finding particularly interesting (and concerning!): "fewer than half agree that faculty at their institution will be receptive to adjusting their curricula to include teaching students how to use AI (43 percent). Additionally, just 36 percent agree that their ...

The Russell Group (a group of the top universities in the UK) recently published their five principles for AI in education; personally I find these really forward-looking, collaborative, and constructive: https://russellgroup.ac.uk/news/new-principles-on-use-of-ai-in-education/ ------------------------------ ...

EAB seems to have put out another gem of a piece, this time in WonkHE: https://wonkhe.com/blogs/six-ways-universities-could-embrace-ai-and-six-ways-to-get-it-wrong/ I love their latest piece because it covers a wide range of applications of AI in higher education, and provides realistic ways forward ...

And there's also Microsoft 365 Copilot for Word and Windows and others. As an avid Microsoft user, I'm excited about this but also I don't think people know what's going to hit them in the next few months. The University of Sydney is a 'Microsoft institution' and I'm trying to think what will happen ...

Thanks for those reflections Scott! As with all things there's probably a spectrum of different ways and reasons students (and us!) use ChatGPT. Our students are saying that students who don't know how to use AI will quickly become disadvantaged compared to those who can. One engineering student here ...

This very interesting article came out over the weekend: https://www.chronicle.com/article/im-a-student-you-have-no-idea-how-much-were-using-chatgpt , and I feel might be the tip of the iceberg. What are everyone's thoughts about this? I'm wondering if this matches with what might be happening at your ...
