The cost savings on each optic is more than enough to cover time for multiple programming cycles. The other significant benefit is the reduction of inventory, since we don't need to keep spare optics for every type of equipment in service. I follow a similar approach as Julian. Network equipment software upgrades are for service or operational bug fixes, security vulnerabilities, or new capabilities. That said, I find myself doing more updates for relatively new hardware, even when I can't point to a specific need (bug, security, capability). ...
