FWIW - I have observed this as well, but the person was using a very recent version of JAWS and a recent version of PowerPoint. Five years ago, the results were more random. Sometimes JAWS would pick up a text box and sometimes it wouldn't. It's clear that some screen readers and PowerPoint are getting ...

I usually do a spot check by examining the underlying HTML code for things like image ALT text, and table tags. If you can open the EPUB in Calibre or Sigil, you can access and review the HTML code. I find that more reliable than testing an exported file. Unfortunately, some EPUBs are encrypted so ...

Devil's advocate - but is Photoshop an essential part of the learning objectives? I understand that inserting images (with the appropriate ALT text) is part of Web design, but how much design is actually expected? Could the assignment be adjusted to allow the student to use another method of obtaining ...

The short answer is that someone needs to test it with a screenreader, but if that is not possible, you can at least check for keyboard accessibility. Is this for a specific class with assigned activities? If so, I would recommend focusing on those. Believe it or not, I did work with a tool which was ...

Nadine: There is no specific prohibition against using red as long as it's used with a background that passes contrast guidelines. BUT There is a prohibition against using color change alone as a signal (WCAG 2.2, Guideline 1.4.1) Color coding needs to be supplemented with some other indication that ...

Sharon: VoiceOver on the Mac has a bit of a reputation of a learning curve, but I've worked with students who genuinely preferred it. If the student still has partial vision, there there may be some ways to help with the learning curve. See some resources below. I've been trying to improve my VoiceOver ...

If you have a choice between closed text based captions vs. open captions, I would recommend closed captions as well. But as Doug Hayman indicated, you don't always have a choice. Not so long ago, we were advising Penn State marketing staff posting videos on various social media platforms that didn't ...

Grade 1 Braille would work in most cases - it just results in a higher page count in Braille printouts. Contracted Braille is also useful, but requires some practice. A software package like Duxbury gives you options for converting a Word file to either Grade 1 or uncontracted Braille. However if the ...

FWIW - I do want to say that I've supported multiple students with visual disabilities who have chosen to use VoiceOver on the Mac. There is a learning curve and it works differently from JAWS, but it's nicely integrated with the Mac OS and has some features I like as well as its quirks. But it's good ...

As others have said, the default setting for screen readers is to NOT recognize changes in character formatting. This applies to both B/I and STRONG/EM. I have a suspicion that it may be a distraction. I do think changes in visual formatting is fine for sighted users to facilitate scanning, but if you ...
