For employee machines we use a prefix – F- for faculty, S- for staff – followed by the person's user ID, and then the model identifier. The model is typically enough to tell us Mac or Windows, laptop or desktop. So for example, professor John Doe's Dell Latitude 7490 might be: F-JD123-7490 ...

Hi Deborah: I've been using the KACE SMA for a decade. It's a comprehensive solution – inventory management, ticketing, software distribution, patching. Because it has its own internal ticketing engine, I don't know how well it would integrate with an external system. Guessing, I would say integration ...

Jim: My take on this – backed up by my own research – is that yes, faculty will insist that they need local admin rights. And some staff (IT staff especially) will buy into that argument. But the reality (at least for us) has been that this is an empty argument -- admin rights are very sparingly required ...

Hi all: We are looking to potentially move from a custom-developed intranet portal to something more off the shelf, and easier to maintain. If anyone is using a COTS intranet/portal platform that they particularly love (or hate!) I'd love some insight. Thanks!! Eric --- Eric J. Rzeszut ...

I guess we're too nice here. When someone leaves, email access goes away after a "grace period" – 90 days for faculty. Unless they're also alumni, in which case they keep it for life. Also, faculty granted "emeritus" status upon retirement keep email for life. But we often help people do PST email ...

Lots of experience with MMA here at McIntire, and in fact we discovered it in 2017 via an EDUCAUSE listserv. Some resources that might be useful: An article on higher ed admin rights assignments from 2018, and some data on our implementation of MMA: https://er.educause.edu/articles/2018/2/reclai ...

Dan: We have a new building under construction here at McIntire, which will include a new Help Desk. This space will become the main Help/Service Desk, while the current space in our existing building will become an auxiliary or secondary desk. One of the points raised by my current team is that ...

Frank: Thanks, and you're not wrong. But we have found it difficult to implement application white-listing due to the volume of applications out there. We do use our KACE Systems Management Appliance to provide a white-listed roster of common application requests. But Make Me Admin still is useful for ...

Hello all: In 2018, a colleague and I published an article called "Reclaiming the Keys to the Kingdom" in EDUCAUSE Review, concerning local admin rights in higher education. This effort led us to the open source app "Make Me Admin" (which we still use for temporary elevations) and we were fortunate ...

Big fan here of Make Me Admin. My boss and I wrote this EDUCAUSE piece on it: https://er.educause.edu/articles/2018/2/reclaiming-the-keys-to-the-kingdom-examining-end-user-administrator-rights-in-higher-education And presented (with the author of the application!) at EDUCAUSE Security 2019: https: ...

An interesting conversation, one we've been having here for a few years (https://er.educause.edu/articles/2019/2/using-amazon-workspaces-to-support-compute-intensive-curricula-at-a-distance) but that has accelerated during the pandemic! When we were completely locked down (second half of the spring ...

Hello: Our School (currently on its own Office 365 tenant) is planning a consolidation into the University's larger O365 tenant. This obviously has lots of repercussions, from mail and calendars to SharePoint, Teams, Yammer, Bookings, etc. Has anyone on this list ever shepherded users through an ...
